Information for Prospective International Students

Application | US government regulation | Director of International Students  | F-2  | TOEFL | GRE

The  faculty, staff, and students of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School consider it a real privilege to have International Students on our campus. There is much that you have to offer us and we hope that you will benefit richly from your experience here.

We realize, however, that you will have to make significant adjustments to a new environment. You may face a different culture and language. You may also need to adjust to different institutional structures and classroom instructional styles. In order to make the transition as smooth as possible and insure that you have a positive experience at Trinity, please read and follow these instructions carefully. They are extremely important to you.

We want to help in every way possible.  Please contact the International Students Office if you need further explanation or details. Tel. 847-317-4063. Fax 847-317-4066. Email: evangeme@tiu.edu. Website: www.tiu.edu/intstudents.

Application Instructions top

1. REGULAR APPLICATION

Please follow the application procedures for the Regular Application that are the same for all applicants.

2. APPLICATION FEE

A check or money order for $25.00 (payable to Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) must be included with   your application. (We no longer require the preliminary application fee.). We will not process your application unless we receive this fee.

3. APPLICATION DEADLINE

Your completed application must be received in our office at least ninety days before the beginning of the term in which you hope to enroll. If you apply later than this, we may process your application for a later Term. (Note: We are on the Semester system. You may apply to begin studies in the first or second semester of each year).

4. TOEFL AND TRINITY ENGLISH PROFICIENCY EXAM

If your mother tongue or first language is not English, you must get an acceptable score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). You may make arrangements to take this test by contacting the Educational Testing Service, Box 953, Princeton, NJ 08540, USA. When you take the TOEFL, be sure to note that our institutional code number is 1797. If you have already taken the test, please refer to this number when you ask the Testing Service to send us a copy of your scores. In addition to the TOEFL, the first term after you come to Trinity, you will be required to take the school's English Proficiency Exam. This is taken during orientation. If your score is less than required, you will be asked to take a course called Critical Reading and Writing Skills that will help you with the language so that you will get the maximum benefit from your courses. Many students choose to take this course even though they passed the exam. It is very helpful in preparing class work/assignments.

5. GRE - The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test may be required. Please see the current catalog and the Application Procedure page for further details. If you submit the TOEFL Scores to us, we may not require you to take the GRE.

6. ACADEMIC RECORDS -  We must have official or certified copies of the academic records of all your secondary and post-secondary education. This should include not only copies of your diplomas, but also copies of all transcripts and records of your course work, examinations, and marks and credits received.  If you have received graduation credentials other than the "Bachelors" degree, please submit a typed statement (one page or less) and/or any other documentation explaining your educational background.

7. HOUSING - Please note that even if you are fully accepted for study at Trinity, this does not guarantee you a place to live either on or off campus. We try to reserve some campus housing for International Students, but we cannot guarantee that housing will be available in the term for which you have applied. Housing is very scarce especially for married students and families. You should be sure to contact the Housing Office as soon as possible because there often is a one to two year waiting list for married student apartments. If it seems that no campus housing is available when you apply, we strongly recommend that you delay coming until you can get it.

Off-campus housing is very expensive and involves getting your own car -- unfortunately, there is no public transportation near the campus. The school takes no responsibility to find you housing off campus. We will help as much as we can by showing you listings of what may be available.

8. SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION - In some countries, acceptance in a school automatically implies a scholarship. This is not true at Trinity and in most schools in America. Acceptance only means that you are admitted to study on the basis of your academic qualifications. It is up to you to find the financial resources to support yourself and the dependents who accompany you. After you have been here for one year, you are qualified to apply for a small International Student grant. Details are available each year at the time of application.

U.S. Government Regulations

1. VISA INFORMATION - In order to issue the I-20 form that allows you to apply for an F-1 student visa, the U.S. government requires the school to have official documents certifying that you have enough money to finance yourself and the dependents who come with you for the first full year of study (two terms).

The Certification of Finances form (COF) that is included in this packet must be correctly completed, notarized and be less than six months old. Please note that if you are using your personal funds, a bank official's signature on the COF or a bank statement showing that you have the stated funds is required. Money from parents, relatives, or friends listed on the COF must be certified by a bank official or their bank statement. If the documents represent foreign currency, they must show the equivalent in U.S. dollars.

If an institution like a church or mission organization is supplying funds, no bank statement is needed. We require instead a letter from the organization stating the exact amount of money in U.S. dollars that they are guaranteeing for your support. This letter must be on the letterhead of the organization and signed by the director or other official.  NOTE: If you expect to attend classes beginning in the Fall semester, ALL financial documents must be received by JULY 1. If you expect to attend classes in the Spring semester, ALL documents must be received by NOVEMBER 1. If the documents are received AFTER those dates it would be practically impossible to guarantee that the I-20 would get to your country in time for you to schedule an appointment at the consulate and to make arrangements for arrival in time for orientation. Also, many consulates are requiring more time for the processing of visas. Please check with your embassy as to their requirements

When you receive the I-20 from Trinity, read it carefully. Be sure to notice #5. The beginning and completion dates of your program are very important. You must enter the program not later than the date stipulated and you are required to leave the country 60 days after the completion date or get an extension.

Next, you should take the I-20 form and your passport to the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate and apply for an F-1 student visa. In addition to your I-20 form, the consular official may ask for proof of English proficiency and/or verification of financial support.

A Transfer form will be sent to International students who are already in this country on an F-1 visa at a different school. This form must be completed by the Designated School Official who issues I-20 forms at the student's previous school and returned directly to the International Students Office at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. Upon arrival at Trinity you must check in with the International Students Office  before registration. Please check with the International Student Advisor also regarding the transferring of your I-20 in the SEVIS reporting system. You will need to submit a new and valid Certification of Finances (COF) form for the program at Trinity. After it has been received, the International Student Advisor will issue you a new I-20 and you will be allowed to register.

2. EMPLOYMENT RESTRICTIONS.  Although the I-20 only requires the student to show finances for the first two semesters of study, International students are expected to arrange for adequate funding for their entire program of study. International Students on an F-1 visa may work on the campus of the school they are attending if they are in good academic standing and maintaining a full course load. This work is limited to 20 hours per week when school is in session and 40 hours during holidays and summer vacation if they are registered for the following term.

All off-campus employment is illegal except with special permission from the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). This includes exchange of goods and services. For instance, babysitting or other work in exchange for living quarters is prohibited.

F-2 visa holders (dependents of F-1 students) are not allowed to work either on or off campus under any circumstances. top

3. GIFTS, HONORARIA, AND SCHOLARSHIPS.  International  students on an F-1 visa may accept any gifts or honoraria such as those given for a one-time speaking engagement. Regular employment such as working in a church in exchange for salary or other benefits is illegal. Gifts from personal friends or any other sources may be accepted.

4. PRACTICAL TRAINING.  The U.S. Government allows an F-1 student to apply for permission to work and be paid in an area that is closely related to their program of study. This is called "Optional Practical Training" and functions like an internship. Permission to do this must be granted by the INS through an application approved by the Director of International Students. A student must have been in lawful student status for 9 consecutive months before being eligible for Practical Training. It is limited to 12 months of full-time training and may be done part time (no more than 20 hours per week) during studies or full time after completion of studies. Part-time training is deducted at one-half the full-time rate.

Curricular Practical Training is also allowed if the student is getting school credit for this work. See the Director of International Students for more details.

5. FULL-TIME COURSE LOAD REQUIREMENTS.  All  F-1 students must maintain a full load of courses. The school designates what is full-time for each program. Full-time status for the following programs is:

Master's level programs: minimum of 10 credit hours

Ph.D/EDS, Ph.D. ICS, and Ph.D. ThS : minimum of 9 credit hours; up to 12 months full-time status allowed for writing the dissertation.

Under certain limited circumstances, an International student may be excused from the full-time requirement.

These are as follows:
--  All F-1 students are considered to be in full time status for Summer vacation if they intend to register for the next term.

--  Serious medical problems (doctor's recommendation needed).

--  Initial (in the first term) difficulties with the English language or reading requirements, unfamiliarity with American teaching methods, or improper course level placement. This is limited to the first term only and the student is required to take the course Critical Reading and Writing Skills.

-- In the last term of study when the student needs less than a full-time course load to complete the program.
